Alicia created an ombré curtain effect with Granny B’s Dove Grey chalk paint diluted in water. The gradual dip produced a darker finish towards the ends of the curtains.
Prepare and test the fabric
Wash the curtains according to their care label and test the diluted paint on a matching fabric sample. Chalk paint can change the feel of the fabric, and the result depends on the fibre and original finish.
If you choose to bleach suitable fabric first, use one fabric-approved product diluted only as its label directs. Never mix Jik, Domestos, vinegar or other cleaners together. Follow the fabric care label and the bleach directions for rinsing and washing before adding colour. Read the CDC guidance on safe bleach handling.
Build the ombré colour
In the original project, Alicia diluted a 50ml pot of Dove Grey in about half a bathtub of water. She soaked the lower half of the curtains first, then left the ends in the colour for longer to deepen the shade. Treat this as a record of her project, and use your sample to choose the dilution and dipping times that suit your fabric.
Dry and check the finish
Hang the curtains so the coloured area does not touch the unpainted fabric. Let them dry fully. Follow the fabric’s care label for ironing, and test the colour for transfer and washing before treating the full set. Ironing alone should not be taken as proof of a washable sealed finish.
