Reviving Old Wooden Chairs with Polka.Paint

Preparing Old Wooden Chairs for Polka.Paint: A Step-by-Step Guide

Painting old wooden chairs can breathe new life into your furniture and add a touch of personality to your space. Whether you're aiming for a classic look or something whimsical lor something contemporary like this bold look by The Woodwork Restoration Guy - where they used Polka.Paint’s Imperial Silk.

1. Clean the Chairs

1. Wash the Chairs:  Use a cloth and a sugar soap solution to remove cobwebs, debris, or dirt build-up on your wood chairs. If there's grease, oil or wax be sure to repeat this process and clean thoroughly. If you prefer you can also use lacquer thinners, but being a solvent it’s more harmful to the environment and is a hazardous substance. Either way cleaning must be followed by a water rinse. Allow the chair to air dry completely.

2. Sand the Chairs  - only if needed!

If your chair has chipping paint, sand it to create a smooth surface. Start with coarse grit sandpaper to remove larger pieces, then gradually use finer grits until you achieve the desired finish. Sand out light scratches and dings, as they'll show through the paint.

3. Fill Holes: If there are deep blemishes, apply wood putty to fill them. Once dry, sand away excess putty until the surface is smooth.

4. Tack Off the Chair: Use a tack cloth or slightly damp cotton cloth to remove dust from sanding. Let the chair air dry before proceeding.

2. Choose Your Color Scheme

1. Pick a Color: Decide on a color or color scheme for your chair. You can go with a solid color or combine contrasting or complementary colors. For a whimsical touch, consider painting different parts of the chair in separate colors.

2. Protect the Area: Place the chair on a drop cloth to protect the surface below from paint spatter and drips.

3. Apply Stainblock (if needed) and Paint

1. Apply Stainblock if you painting a dark wood rich in tannin or stain:Use an angled brush to apply a coat of Block & Tackle in a uniform layer. Focus on corners and crevices. Let the coat dry. If needed, apply a second coat for a smooth surface.

2. Stir Your Paint: Stir the paint thoroughly before applying.

3. Apply Your Polka.Paint or Chalkpaint Use several light coats rather than one heavy coat. This prevents drips and ensures even coverage.

4. Protective Clear Coat: Once the paint is dry, consider applying a protective clear coat to seal and safeguard your newly painted wooden chair. With Polka.Paint, sealing is optional, but advised for high traffic use and outdoor settings. Polka.Seal is your go-to tough seal.

Remember, patience and attention to detail during preparation will yield a stunning result. Happy painting! 🎨✨
