Furniture Prep for Chalkpaint

In today's blog post, we will be sharing a comprehensive guide on preparing your furniture for chalk painting. Whether you're a seasoned DIY enthusiast or just starting out, properly prepping your furniture before applying chalk paint is essential to achieving a flawless finish. Here are some key steps to consider when prepping your furniture:

  1. Cleaning the Surface: Before you begin painting, it's crucial to clean the surface of your furniture thoroughly. This will remove any dirt, grease, or residue that may interfere with the adhesion of the chalk paint. Use a mild soap and water solution or a dedicated furniture cleaner to gently wash the surface. We recommend sugar-soap or lacquer thinners.

  2. Removing Hardware and Upholstery: If your furniture has any hardware or upholstery, it's best to remove them before painting. This will make the painting process easier and ensure that you can reach all areas of the furniture surface.

  3. Sanding the Surface: Only sanding the surface if you wish to smooth out or even out the surface. Granny B's Old Fashioned Paint does not require sanding. Sanding older furniture will increase the risk wood-bleed.

  4. Repairing any Damages: Inspect your furniture for any damages such as scratches, dents, or loose joints. Repairing these damages before painting will not only improve the appearance of your furniture but also ensure its longevity.

  5. Surface Protection and Stain-block: To protect your older furniture from potential wood-bleed into the new coat of paint; it's a good idea to apply a layer of sealant or primer before painting. We recommend Granny B's Block and Tackle - a stainblocking primer

  6. Applying the Chalk Paint: Once your furniture is clean, repaired, and protected, it's time to apply your Granny B's Old Fashioned Paint. Remember to stir the paint thoroughly before starting and apply multiple thin coats for a smooth and even finish.

  7. Sealing and Finishing: After the chalk paint has dried, you can choose to seal and finish your furniture. Granny B's offers several sealing options, including our brush on liquid sealers, Pappa G's traditional #ChalkpaintWax available in clear, black, white, gold, silver, and antique

  8. Enjoy the Results: Once you have completed all the necessary steps, sit back and enjoy the beautiful transformation of your furniture.

Prepping your furniture is crucial for achieving a smooth and long-lasting chalk paint finish. It ensures proper adhesion, repairs any damages, and protects the surface from potential issues like wood-bleed or interfering pigments. Following these steps will help you prepare your furniture for chalk painting and ensure a successful and beautiful finish.
