From dark and dated to light and beautiful
Our starting point was a traditional wooden chest of drawers with a dark, warm-toned finish. While the furniture itself had plenty of character, the orange-brown wood gave it a dated appearance.
Rather than hiding the timber beneath an opaque coat of paint, we wanted to preserve the grain while creating a softer, lighter finish.
What you’ll need
Granny B’s Wood Lightening & Bleaching Kit

You’ll also need sandpaper or an electric sander, suitable brushes, a mixing container, clean water, lint-free cloths, chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection.
Step 1: Sand the furniture back to bare wood
Preparation is the foundation of a beautiful natural wood finish. Remove handles or hardware that could get in the way, and take drawers out where practical so you can work on each surface individually.
The original varnish, lacquer, wax or other coating needs to be removed from the areas you intend to lighten. Sand the timber back to clean bare wood, always working with the grain.
Take extra care when sanding veneered furniture, as the decorative wood layer can be thin. Once the surface is properly prepared, remove all sanding dust.
Granny’s tip: The bleaching system needs access to the natural timber. Any remaining varnish or sealant may prevent an even result.
Step 2: Apply Part A
Wearing your protective gloves and eye protection, apply Part A of the Granny B’s Wood Lightening & Bleaching Kit evenly across the bare timber.
Work systematically so the surface receives consistent coverage, especially across larger areas such as drawer fronts and tabletops.
Step 3: Apply Part B and activate the lightening process
Apply Part B directly over the Part A-treated surface, following the instructions supplied with the kit. This activates the wood-lightening reaction.
As the treatment works, the warm, dark tones of the timber begin to soften and lighten. Because the natural wood itself is being changed rather than covered, the grain remains visible.
Allow the reaction to complete according to the product instructions. Results will vary depending on the timber species, its original colour and any previous staining.
Important: Follow all application, safety and neutralisation directions supplied with the kit. Once the reaction is complete, neutralise the treated timber with the specified vinegar solution and allow it to dry thoroughly before applying another finish.
Step 4: Create a soft Polka.Paint Cacao wash
Once the timber is fully dry, it’s time to soften and refine the tone with Polka.Paint Cacao.
Decant a little Cacao into a clean mixing container and gradually add clean water until you reach a translucent wash consistency. The thinner the mixture, the more of the natural timber will remain visible.
Always test the mixture on an inconspicuous area or a piece of similarly prepared timber before applying it to the whole project.
Step 5: Work with the grain and build the colour slowly
Brush the diluted Cacao wash along the direction of the wood grain, working in manageable sections.
While the wash remains workable, use a clean lint-free cloth to remove any excess product. This allows the lighter timber to show through while the Cacao subtly adjusts the overall tone.
For a more translucent finish, wipe back more of the wash. For greater colour depth, leave a little more on the surface.
Granny’s tip: Always work in the direction of the grain. It helps the finish look natural instead of painted on.
Step 6: Protect the finish
Once the wash has dried completely, protect your makeover with Polka.Seal.
For furniture that gets regular handling, such as drawers, side tables and cabinets, a protective sealer helps the finish stand up to everyday use.
The final reveal
What a difference. The original dark, orange-brown furniture has been transformed into a beautiful light natural-wood piece.
The wood grain remains visible, the warm tones have been softened, and the subtle Cacao wash gives the piece a contemporary neutral finish.
Can you bleach any wooden furniture?
Different wood species react differently to lightening, so results will vary. Always test an inconspicuous area first.
The timber must be properly prepared, with previous coatings removed from the areas being treated. Extra care is required with veneer, especially during sanding.
Remember that wood bleaching is a chemical process. Always wear appropriate protective equipment, work in a well-ventilated area and follow the product instructions.
