Wax, Glaze, or Sealer: Which Finish is Right for You?

Wax, Glaze, or Sealer: Which Finish is Right for You?

So, you've just finished painting your masterpiece with Granny B’s Old Fashioned Paint and you’re ready to take it to the next level. But with so many finishing options – wax, glaze, and sealer – it can be overwhelming to decide which one is right for you. Fear not! We’re here to break it down.

Wax: The Classic Finish
Wax is a timeless choice that adds depth, character, and protection to your painted piece. It enhances the color of your paint, giving it a soft, velvety look. Wax is also relatively easy to apply and remove, making it a popular choice for beginners.
* Pros: Easy to apply, enhances color, creates a soft finish, can be removed for touch-ups.
* Cons: Less durable than sealer, may require more frequent reapplication.

Glaze: The Distressed Look
Glaze is perfect for creating a distressed or aged appearance. It’s a translucent mixture that can be applied over your paint to create depth and dimension. You can vary the application technique to achieve different effects, from subtle highlights to dramatic cracks. NB: Glaze is not a sealer, it’s ideal for paint effects
* Pros: Creates a distressed or aged look, adds depth and dimension, can be customized.
* Cons: Can be messy to apply, requires more skill and practice and does not seal or protect

Sealer: The Protective Shield
Sealer is essential for protecting your painted piece from wear and tear. It creates a hard, durable finish that will help your furniture withstand everyday use. Sealer is available in matte, satin, and gloss finishes, allowing you to customize the look of your piece.
* Pros: Protects your paint from wear and tear, available in different finishes.
* Cons: Can slightly alter the appearance of the paint, may not be suitable for all styles.

Which one should you choose?
The best choice for you will depend on the look you want to achieve and the level of protection you need. Here are a few tips:
* If you want a soft, natural look: Wax is a great option.
* If you want a distressed or aged appearance: Glaze is the way to go.
* If you need maximum protection: Sealer is essential.

You can also combine these finishes for a unique look. For example, you could apply a glaze over your paint and then seal it for both beauty and protection.

Remember: A little practice goes a long way. Don't be afraid to experiment with different finishes to find the perfect look for your project.

Happy painting!
